A news-packed August
· A NEWS-PACKED AUGUST ·
Bitcoin and the scarcity effect
· BITCOIN AND THE SCARCITY EFFECT ·
August was dominated by a spectacular Bitcoin rally, which broke through the $124,000 mark for the first time before correcting towards $110,000 at the end of the month.
This movement was amplified by a tightening supply: less than 15% of circulating bitcoins are still availab
le on exchanges, with the remainder being accumulated by companies, ETFs and institutional investors. Almost one million bitcoins are now held by around 150 listed companies, intensifying upward pressure on the price (Barron’s, Financial News).
Ethereum and the rise of Layer 2 solutions
· ETHEREUM AND THE RISE OF LAYER 2 SOLUTIONS ·
Ethereum saw a more mixed performance, stabilising around $3,000.
Conversely, Layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base experienced a surge in activity, driven by the growth of DeFi projects and new tokens.
These developments reinforce Ethereum's position as a central ecosystem, even as competition from specialised blockchains continues to grow.
Circle's historic IPO
· CIRCLE'S HISTORIC IPO ·
The other major event of the summer was the initial public offering of Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin. Following a spectacular first day of trading in June, the company confirmed a further fundraising round in August with the issuance of 10 million additional shares.
This transaction aims to support its expansion plans and consolidate its position as a leader in regulated stablecoins, at a time when the integration of these assets into traditional finance is accelerating (Reuters, Investor’s Business Daily).
PSG and the crypto strategy of sports clubs
· PSG AND THE CRYPTO STRATEGY OF SPORTS CLUBS ·
In August, Paris Saint-Germain confirmed its intention to strengthen its presence in the crypto space. The club is not only exploring a more intensive use of its fan tokens, but is also considering integrating Bitcoin into its treasury.
This decision illustrates how football clubs are using blockchain to build fan loyalty and diversify revenue streams, paving the way for other European sports entities.
US politics and electoral issues
· US POLITICS AND ELECTORAL ISSUES ·
On the political front, crypto has emerged as a major campaign issue in the United States. Eric Trump publicly stated that his family 'loves the Bitcoin community' and predicted that the price could reach one million dollars.
The current administration continues to affirm its support for crypto innovation, notably through an executive order directing the Department of Labor to examine the inclusion of Bitcoin in retirement plans—a signal seen as decisive by Wall Street (Reuters, Barron’s).
Regulation: Europe moves forward, the US hesitates
· REGULATION: EUROPE MOVES FORWARD, THE US HESITATES ·
Finally, regulation remains a central issue. The European Union is continuing to implement MiCA, which will be rolled out progressively by 2026, providing greater legal clarity to industry players.
In the United States, on the other hand, debates between the SEC and Congress are slowing down the establishment of a clear framework. This disparity is prompting more and more companies to favour Europe and Asia for their bases.
Outlook
· OUTLOOK ·
August 2025 confirmed the growing maturity of the crypto ecosystem.
Bitcoin is establishing itself as an increasingly institutionalised asset, Ethereum and its layer-2 solutions remain at the heart of technical innovation, and companies like Circle are demonstrating that stablecoins can bridge the gap into traditional finance.
At the same time, sports clubs and the political sphere are bolstering the presence of crypto on the public stage. Although volatility remains inherent to the sector, long-term signals remain resolutely positive.
