Trump and crypto: Between financial ambition and relational failure

JOSHUA HEPNER · 28 MAY 2025 · 3 MIN READ

AUTOMATICALLY TRANSLATED FROM FRENCH

*The cryptocurrency world is experiencing a decisive week with Donald Trump at its centre.*

On the one hand, a bombshell $2.5 billion announcement to establish a Bitcoin reserve, demonstrating unprecedented financial ambition for a former president. On the other, an exclusive crypto dinner that turned into a relational fiasco, exposing the tension between grandiose promises and disappointing reality.

These simultaneous events illustrate Trump's complex strategy in the blockchain universe: promising a financial revolution while monetising his influence among his wealthiest supporters.

The $TRUMP memecoin: A controversial presidential currency

· THE $TRUMP MEMECOIN: A CONTROVERSIAL PRESIDENTIAL CURRENCY ·

The *$TRUMP* memecoin was launched in January 2025 on the Solana blockchain as a cryptocurrency officially associated with Donald Trump.

Unlike traditional crypto projects, this token presents itself primarily as a symbol of support for the president, with no specific technical utility—the very definition of a "memecoin".

Its distribution is particularly unequal: approximately *80% of the total supply is controlled by the Trump Organization and its affiliates*, according to the project's official website.

Since its launch, the token has generated over $324 million in transaction fees, the majority of which goes directly to the Trump Organization.

At the same time, the Trump family financially supports World Liberty Financial, the company behind the USD1 stablecoin, backed by US Treasury bills and dollar deposits.

Abu Dhabi investment fund MGX recently pledged $2 billion in USD1 to Binance, the world's largest digital asset exchange, marking the firm's largest-ever investment in cryptocurrencies.

A crypto dinner that leaves a bitter taste

· A CRYPTO DINNER THAT LEAVES A BITTER TASTE ·

On 22 May, the 220 largest holders of the $TRUMP memecoin were invited to an exclusive dinner at the Trump National Golf Club in Virginia. To attend, these investors had collectively spent $148 million on tokens, billed as an "entry ticket" for an event described as "the most exclusive invitation in the world".

*"The food was awful," said Nicholas Pinto, who spent over $320,000 in TRUMP tokens to attend. "McDonald's would have been better."* Even more disappointing, Trump appeared for only 23 minutes, without interacting with the majority of attendees. (CNBC)

His speech was described as *"25 minutes of bullshit that ultimately said nothing concrete" by one attendee, who watched the president "drive off in a golf cart"* without meeting expectations.

The event was strictly hierarchical: the 25 largest holders (the "VIPs") had spent an average of $4.8 million each to gain access to a private reception and a guided tour.

These privileged seats were reserved for the three front tables, whilst other attendees like Pinto were relegated to the back. (Decrypt)

The dinner itself was arranged *"like a wedding"*, according to Pinto, with nine people per table. Each seat featured a small gift bag containing a hat featuring the Trump memecoin, a small poster, and a plastic "celebration card"—which attendees reportedly fought over. Decrypt

Political and ethical concerns

· POLITICAL AND ETHICAL CONCERNS ·

This dinner raised *questions in the US Congress* regarding the potential influence of foreign investors. An analysis revealed that the majority of top wallets were using foreign exchanges that are normally off-limits to Americans.

Republican Representative French Hill admitted that "the Trump family's activity in the memecoin space complicates my work in Congress" and threatens the bipartisan stablecoin regulation bill. CNBC

In the wake of the dinner, the price of the $TRUMP memecoin fell by 16%, illustrating the stark contrast between *stated ambitions and the disappointing reality of Donald Trump's crypto empire in the making.*
